Eight years of creative support for the city’s council: campaigns, consultations, venues, events and the website, first project by project and now as their retained creative team.

The brief.

Salisbury City Council runs much of what makes the city tick: the Guildhall, the Crematorium, the parks and market place, a year-round programme of events from Armed Forces Day to the Charter Fair, and consultations that shape the city’s future. Each needed to be promoted well, on tight public-sector budgets, to residents and visitors alike. What started in 2018 as a single project grew into a steady stream of work, and with it a bigger question: how could the council present everything it does with one recognisable voice, rather than a logo doing the heavy lifting on a hundred different posters?

Our approach.

We began with the one-offs. A consultation campaign for the Neighbourhood Development Plan, with posters, pull-up banners, a survey booklet and reporting that made the results easy to read. A visitor map of the city for the Information Centre. Brochures and advertising for the Guildhall and the Crematorium that gave each venue its own character. A new website for the council, designed and built from scratch, and another for Salisbury Film Office. Along the way we built the creative for the council’s events programme and kept it fresh each year: posters and banners for Armed Forces Day, Fun in the Park and the Charter Fair, the “Salisbury. Welcoming since 1227.” campaign, Salisbury Street Sellers, Foodie Sunday, and Fayre on the Square, which has had a new look every summer since 2021.

In 2024 we proposed a different way of working. Rather than quoting job by job, a creative retainer gives the council a set number of days each month across design, web, digital marketing and search, with a monthly marketing meeting to review what’s been delivered, plan what’s next and benchmark against other councils. The first priorities have been the Christmas programme (Christmas on the Square, the Sunday Festive Markets and Santa’s Grotto), the council’s first email newsletter, and extending the website’s colour palette and modules so the brand can flex across every event and service.

The results.

A council whose communications now feel like they come from the same place, and a team that can call on us for anything from an A-board to a public consultation without a new brief each time. The yearly campaigns are recognised around the city, and the retainer has turned a reactive relationship into a planned one, with a priority list that includes sponsorship modules, an events calendar, accessibility improvements and new revenue opportunities for the council.
